Metabolic behaviour and cleavage capacity in the amphibian egg.

چکیده
During the winter season the full grown Bufo arenarum oocyte shows the metabolic behaviour characteristic of differentiated tissues of the same species. Due to seasonal variations, during the amplexus period, it acquires the metabolic behaviour of the segmenting egg. Short-time-induced ovulations (5-6 h) determine germinal vesicle breakdown immediately before the expulsion of the oocyte, without modifying the ovarian metabolism of the same. The incidence of the operative type of metabolism upon their capacity to cleave after insemination and needle pricking, has been studied in coelomic oocytes, which have attained nuclear maturation and have not experienced oviducal secretion effects. The results obtained indicate that the segmenting capacity of the egg is attained only when, through biochemical modifications, the oocyte acquires the metabolic behaviour characterizing embryonic cells. It is postulated that the metabolic changes observed in the oocyte constitue a fundamental aspect of cytoplasmic maturation.

Effect of microinjected N-ethylmaleimide-modified heavy meromyosin on cell division in amphibian eggs
N-Ethylmaleimide-modified heavy meromyosin (NEM-HMM) microinjected into amphibian eggs inhibits cytokinesis and the cortical contractions associated with wound closure. Injection of NEM-HMM into two-cell Rana pipiens embryos produces a zone of cleavage inhibition around the point of injection. Early furrows followed by time-lapse microcinematography are seen to slow and stop as they enter the N...
متن کاملPreliminary Observations on the Mechanism of Cleavage in the Amphibian Egg
The formation of blastomeres by the newly fertilized egg has been studied by many authors, who have found the process a convenient avenue for attacking the general problem of cell division. By far the greater part of the work has been carried out on the eggs of marine invertebrates, and, in spite of their great suitability for most types of experimental embryological investigation, the eggs of ...
متن کاملStudies of the cleavage in the frog egg. I. On the temporal relation between furrow determination and nuclear division.
The cleavage plane in normally dividing animal cells is closely related to the position and the direction of the mitotic apparatus (cf. Gray, 1931). A displacement of the mitotic apparatus induces a corresponding shift in the position of the furrow in seaurchin eggs (Harvey, 1935; Rappaport & Ebstein, 1965), in the grasshopper neuroblasts (Carlson, 1952; Kawamura, i960) and in amphibian eggs (W...
متن کاملReversal of developmental competence in inverted amphibian eggs.
Inverted amphibian embryos were employed for an analysis of pattern formation in early embryogenesis. Axolotl (Ambystoma) and Xenopus eggs were inverted prior to the first cleavage division and permitted to develop upside down to the early gastrulation stage. In both cases the cleavage patterns of the animal and vegetal hemispheres were reversed. By gastrulation, however, developmental arrest b...

Vertebrate ancestors would have increased their egg size to store yolk, and the increase is considered to have altered the cleavage pattern and germ layer formation. Amphibian holoblastic cleavage in which all blastomeres contribute to any one of the three primary germ layers has been widely thought to be a developmental pattern in the stem lineage of vertebrates, and meroblastic cleavage to ha...
